This year’s program kicks off with a presentation at City Council at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, when Mayor Moncrief will open up the Library’s “Big Book.” Beginning on Saturday, May 21, you can visit any Fort Worth Library branch to pick up a Reading Card and get started. Read as much as you can during the summer, recording it on your Reading Card.

Open to all ages, the challenge encourages residents to read as much as they can to win prizes — such as MP3 players, a netbook computer or an eReader — and to participate in great programs. It's all centered around this year's theme, "Deep in the Heart of Texas," emphasizing heart-healthy lifestyles in addition to an activity that should be close to every Texan's heart — reading.

So get off the couch this summer; get active; stop by your local library branch for great story tellers, musicians and educational programs; and get reading.

Mark your calendars for Saturday April 30 for El día de los niños/ El día de los libros. Children's Day/Book Day is a celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The youth center will have Spanish and English bilingual story times throughout the afternoon at 1,2,4 and 5pm and at 3pm we will play the Library Book Walk and have piñatas!

Specially trained dogs from Therapy Dogs International are available from 1-3pm April 2 in the Youth Center. Children can practice reading aloud in a calming and fun environment while visiting with the dogs.

A Holiday Celebration Worth Writing About

Live Music in the Youth Center 2PM Sunday February 28

This educational presentation focuses on the history of the classical guitar, tracing its roots from 17th century England to our present time. Each major period in Western music is addressed, explaining where the guitar fit in as well as the musical figures who contributed to the instrument’s evolution. Join us this Saturday Feb 6 for Tail Waggin Tutors in the Youth center's Reading Pavilion. Bring your reading voices and share a book with a therapy dog, specially trained to listen to kids read out loud.

Also join us Saturday February 20 at 2 for a bluegrass class! Learn about the delightful sounds of original American music genres bluegrass and folk. Jodi Jenkins and Cathi Horsey perform live music and describe traditions on which the music was founded. Whether it’s the ringing of the banjo or the high and lonesome harmony, the sound is timeless and joyful. Children will be able to participate in discovering the history of bluegrass/folk and how it provides a musical foundation for the road ahead.

The library is also welcoming classical guitarist Jeffrey Bianchi to the Youth Center Sunday February 28 at 2pm where we will explore the history of classical guitar, while listening to beautiful music!

Just a reminder that the library closes early Thursday Dec 31 at 6pm for New Year's Eve and is closed New Year's Day Friday January 1. We will reopen on Saturday at 10AM. Join us for Tail Waggin Tutors Saturday from 1-3pm. Children who are reluctant readers are invited to come and read to our specially trained therapy dogs who offer puppy love and patience.

Join us for Nintendo Wii game fun when Wii Play @ the library Saturday and Sunday from 3-4pm and as always we have Storytime on demand where you and your family can ask one of the librarians for a story anytime we are open.

Also, Tuesday evenings this year we will continue to offer Bearly bedtime storytime at 6pm and Preschool storytime Wednesdayas at 10.30.

Snow Party Story Time

Looking for something fun (and free) to do with the kids? Join us at the Central Library Dec. 21-23 for special holiday story times.

Most Fort Worth Library branches will be closed on Dec. 23. But the Central Library will be open – and it is the perfect place to go for holiday story time, which will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Also, from Dec. 21-23, you can make reservations for a private story time. Just call ahead and ask the librarians to have a story time ready for your family or group. The stories will be based on a “Snow Party” theme. In addition to the readings, children will get to do movement activities and make a butterfly snowflake.

Wii play @ the library

Join us October 31 from 2-4 in the Discovery Theatre for the kick off Wii Play for kids aged 5-12 in the Discovery Theatre. We will play educational video games geared to a younger audience such as Dora Saves the Snow Princess and Build a Bear workshop, which encourage problem solving and literacy skills.

Our regular gaming schedule starts Sunday November 1:

Saturday and Sunday: 3-4pm. Family Wii play will be held Thursday evenings from 6-7pm.

New Story Time Programs in the Youth Center

Happy Fall! We hope that everyone is enjoying the season and has settled into the new school year. The Youth Center has been busy planning fun new programs for you and your family. We have Booker's Alley Story Time Wednesday mornings at 10.30. This is a great time to share fun stories, songs and rhymes with preschool aged children, though all ages are welcome. This program is held in the Youth Center's Discovery Theatre.

Families are invited to join us in the Youth Center Reading Pavilion Tuesday evenings for Bearly Bedtime stories at 6.00. Here we will read a few stories before bed. Pajamas optional! And...don't forget to introduce yourself to Cody, our new giant teddy bear who lives in the Pavilion's window seat!

Additionally, on weekends we have started Story Time On Demand. Whenever you visit the Youth Center on Saturdays and Sundays, ask us for a story and one of our librarians will be happy to read you one of their favorite books.

We always have crafts to create in the Art area, so be sure to come visit!

The 2008 Summer Reading Program is now one for the books. We had a wonderful summer encouraging all of you to read for pleasure. Not only is reading fun, but it's inexpensive, it helps you keep up with your school skills while school is out, and it's an easy way to beat the summer heat!

Over 17,000 people took part in our Summer Reading Program. Some of our very special members got to represent their branches at the August 5 City Council Meeting. Here are some pictures showing you how it all went.

The Fort Worth Library youth center’s namesake, Hazel Harvey Peace, passed away last weekend. She was 100 years old and for decades had been an inspiration to Fort Worth children and educators. The youth center’s staff extends their sympathy to all who knew her.

Summer is almost here

This summer story time continues Tuesday mornings at 10:30. Join us for stories and activities where we explore the six pre reading skills all children need to know before they begin to read.

In June and July the youth center has fun activities planned Thursday mornings at 10:30 and Saturday afternoons at 2pm. Some programs include visits from the Fort Worth Nature Center, the Creature Teacher, Dan Gibson, Mr. Willy, Cool School with Miss Maria, Mad Science and more.

Mayor Mike's Summer Reading Challenge

is almost here! Sign up is now available online and also in person at your local FWPL branch. This year's theme is Summer Time Machine: Past, Present, Future and by reading with us you can travel in time to the past or visit the future - just by reading a book!

The Youth Center is revving up the Time Machine Saturday May 31st. We are happy to present a play performed by Hip Pocket Theater at 2pm. We will also have more fun and games after the play, including a Mad Science workshop. Come by and see us!

Dia de los Ninos Celebration at Central Library!

Today we had a very exciting event to celebrate Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros! (This means Day of the Child/Day of the Book.) Wonderful actors from the Kids Who Care Resident Company and MHMR'S We Have a Voice Company collaborated to bring us a delightful performance of Free To Be: You and Me! Over 220 audience members loved this life-affirming play that celebrates our differences and encourages us to put aside stereotypes. The actors gave an outstanding performance!

After the play, children and parents enjoyed refreshments and free books were given to the first 100 children in attendance.

Art Show is A Huge Success!!!!

On Thursday, April 10 the Central Library was full of happy young artists and their proud parents who came to see the annual Fort Worth ISD art show open house! Talented young painters and sculptors from 75 different schools presented their masterpieces, and over 1400 people turned out to see their wonderful work! The art will be here until April 16, so you still have time to catch the show!
